Winamp bids goodbye?
If this is true, it’s really sad indeed. Even before we heard about iPods and iRivers, this was the app that introduced us to the wonders of mp3 technology not to mention shoutcast. Justin, thanks for the wonderful app and the revolution you started—you’ll always be remembered. AOL, you can go to hell.
AOL didn’t make proper use of the Winamp market and Nullsoft’s resources, they should probably learn a thing or two from Apple. If not anyone I have bid farewel to Winamp after testing 5.0 about a year ago inspite of the fact that I used only Winamp to play MP3’s from its 2.xx days, Winamp these days can’t compete with itunes or even Foobar2000
Nov 12, 04 at 04:53Suman: I’m still religiously using Winamp since over six years, and I feel good about it. Somehow looking for an alternate player never crossed my mind simply because Winamp pretty much did want I wanted—play great music. When I tried iTunes the first time, it messed-up my files, folders, playlists et al. I don’t like any software playing goofy with my file system, but I hear it’s improved now. Let me give it another spin. Foobar2000 looks insanely plain (and cool)!
Nov 12, 04 at 09:34In iTunes edit -> pref - > advanced tab lets you set who takes control of the media files, I usually let iTunes maintain the music folder, it does a neat job of it too. I can’t live without smart playlists… this is something that made me ditch Winamp in the end. Lastly iTunes has a very good mp4 encoder, probably one of the best free mp4 encoders around, however its mp3 encoder is not to the mark yet.
Like you said Foobar is one hell of a geeky audio player
Its done by Peter who used to be a Winamp coder during its glory days.
