The Ubuntu experience

Writing this on an Ubuntu system (I’m using a live CD) with Gnome 2.10 is such a lovely experience that only linux users (specifically Gnome users) connect with. It has been a while since I used a Gnome desktop so, it was a real kick. It has a “softy” feel to its UI, the menus look a lot like a Mac’s interface minus the aqua.

The boot-up was a little longer than Knoppix, but because this is a live CD, I’m okay with that. It connected to my network and the internet instantly (no PPPOE stuff to do, just like my current WindowsXP setup) probably because my D-Link network WiFi router takes care of it.

I’m a huge fan of Evolution and I’ve raved about this before, but the surprise this time was Liferea, the wonderful feed reader. It’s so simple, yet, so much usable. I’m now a fan.

I’m having such a great time with Ubuntu that I may end-up installing this on my mom’s hard-drive when I go home late this July, since she’s still struggling with Windows 98. Ubuntu would probably work right-off the box for her. I’ll still play with this some more before deciding on it, but as of now, the good times roll.

Please do not judge Linux based on Ubuntu. I run Ubuntu in my office only to function as a node by which to SSH my SuSE box in University. Ubuntu is reliable, but somewhat weak.

Roy: Does it look like I’m judging Linux based on Ubuntu? Whatever gave you that idea?

    Nothing *smile*

Just remember to tell you mom not to try to recompile the kernel. *smile*

I do Linux, run several Fedora Core servers at work, also a few FreeBSD. I do use a BSD flavour on my second workstation at work. Ubuntu is on my VMWare as well :-) Derivative from Debian, Ubuntu is rock solid.

i’ve been using linux and freebsd for about 10 years and ubuntu has been my distribution of choice since its beginning. i’ve yet to have a serious problem with it. ubuntu is the first distribution to correctly recognize my netgear g wireless card.
