Sage is back

For a while, I thought we lost a good extension called RSS Reader when its development was re-christened as Sage with Firefox turning 0.9. I faced opml import problems with Sage 1.1 and 1.2. But now with version 1.3, it’s back. I just updated my dormant Sage extension and it’s good to go again. I didn’t face any problems importing OPML sets or updating bookmarks. Also, Firefox 1.0 makes it rather easy to use with feed auto-discovery feature.

I still highly recommend FeedDemon to anyone that wants a serious feed application, but Sage is now a good contender (not to mention being completely free). Another advantage of using Sage is that you can open links directly in Firefox—a feature experimental in FeedDemon and requires some registry hack to work. With Sage, Firefox, as an application, looks better than ever.

You can download Sage extension here. In addition, I’ve uploaded some custom stylesheets from the original RSS Reader panel and a few that I’ve modified for my own use here. Reminds me to ping guys on Sage development team to add a section for custom stylesheets.

Chetan, do you know of Optimal Desktop? It is a desktop aggregator that offers a tabbed matrix interface and integrates the functions of a RSS Reader, web browser and file manager.

Optimal Desktop let’s you build your own navigation and get anywhere with 3 clicks or less. You can also easily publish links with Optimal Desktop. Drag and drop headlines from different feeds and create a new feed file, or simply publish your favorite internet links as a feed.

You can see how I use Optimal Desktop to create feeds and tabbed browser files on my blog site. The web site is http://www.optimalaccess.com
