Power-up those intranets

The thing about intranet is the amazing number of things you can do with it. Intranet, unlike the public-facing-homesite, is a distinctively internal interactive system. Calling it anything other than that would be degrading some of its features.

I use these on our intranet on a day-to-day basis:

  • My department’s knowledge portal, Gateway for all the reference info.
  • A progress log to keep track of my own progress on projects and to-dos.
  • Light php scripting to run some mundane calculations.
  • Maintaining a couple of servers via remote admin.
  • Company portal for project based happenings, timesheets and recreational news.
  • Look-up company’s phone book.
  • Look-up hardcopy books’ availability in the library.

At 100Mbps, you could stream anything via intranets like an on-demand demonstration or a presentation video, an internal project meeting without leaving your workstation, internal messaging, collaborative project management, et al. Yet companies are mostly unaware of the potential and possibilites, and that they’re not just limited to serving static pages of company’s stock market share graphs.

If you do something innovative on your intranets, do share your thoughts.
