Podcasts

I enjoy listening to podcasts. Why? For the same reason I enjoy reading blogs. They’re informal, they offer me something that I don’t get via the conventional media, and they project real voices and opinions. Another reason–perhaps–is because I get to hear great web personalities, their views and their ideas, whom so far I’ve only read them or about them. In addition, voice defines the tone and mood of conversation, sort of shows people in their real colors and projects a kind of image about the person you’re listening to (if you haven’t met one in person), which is something of a miss when I read blogs. Yet another reason (a lame one possibly) is that I can close my eyes while listening instead of straining my eyes reading =)

In the podcasting news, Yahoo! has announced a podcasting service. Tom Coates has an excellent review that I absolutely agree with.

Podcasting is something I would really like to know more about. I don’t have an iPod so I will have to listen to the feeds on my desktop only. Where do you think is a good place to start? I looked at Odeo, but anything else you would recommend?

Kapil, why not try iTunes? Listening to podcasts can’t be any easier.

Suman: Thanks. Someone at office uses iTunes to listen to Radio Stations, I didn’t know we could do podcasts on that too. Will surely try it.

Chetan, a shameless plug for a family member…my brother, Havoc has started a weekly podcast - IndiCast. He would love to get some feedback from seasoned bloggers like you.

Kapil : Besides Itunes, I like Yahoo’s Podcast service as well coz it doesn’t require any software download and its pretty “idiot” proof with big buttons for “Listen” & “Subscribe”. THe good thing about itunes is that you can have itunes download episodes automatically as they are released so it saves you the pain to go to the website and check for the latest episode.

Patrix : Thanks for the plug!!! (huh, so this is what family is for!!!)

Chetan : Give Indicast a shot.. let us know what you think.. it’ll be great to hear from you.

Patrix, Havoc: Comments are in the mail. Good start. I’m subscribed on Odeo. Looking forward to see an audio version of Desipundit in IndiCast.

    Chetan,

In addition to giving your eyes some relief :-) podcasting provides you the luxury of deciding what, when and where you want to listen to programs of your choice. Portability and time-shifting are two important pillars of podcasting (the other two being narrowcasting and personal publishing). So podcasts can be your companion while driving or on those long boring plane rides too.

Check out http://www.podbazaar.com; it’s an online portal with podcasts targeted at the South Asian audience. We are increasing the number of genres and languages. We will soon be having a news bulletin that all of you may find useful. Let us know your comments.
