News online - the practice

I read in awe and inspiration as two very talented designers, Cameron Moll and Jason Santa Maria, are having birth pangs while breathing new life into a 200-year old newspaper in its online edition. These guys are not just bouncing an age old newspaper back online, but virtually crafting it with precision.

A while ago, I wrote a post—out of frustration—about how to improve news presentation online while criticizing the shoddy way most indian mainstream media present today. Articles such as these reinforce the thought that improvisation is not only possible, but in all its grandeur. If only more mainstream media would think about their readers.

Oh, by the way, Asian Age just became the new Times of India when it comes to the worst presentation ever online. I mean the site is virtually blank in Firefox. Instead, I see this:

“This page can only be seen in IE”

Compatibility: Your web browser needs to support HTML4.01, CSS2 and JavaScript to correctly view this page.

Bravo! I wonder which idiot designed Asian Age.

On a side note, Indian Express seems to be tweaking their online edition in an entirely different domain. I mean compare Express India (the shitty version) vs. Indian Express (somewhat improved, but still tight and still serving pop-ups that my browser is thankfully blocking).

As a personal achievement following this post, I’ve got my wife reading DNA more now.
