NDTV: “Should blogs be regulated?”

Mon, 14 Jan 2008 at 23:33 • Chyetanya Kunte • Filed under Citizen Journalists

Somebody, please, lend a copy of We the media to Ms. Barkha Dutt. I wasted an hour watching her rip the guts of blogging in the show “Should blogs be regulated?”1 yesterday. The proceedings were obvious for everyone to see—the line of questioning, the intimidation, towing the moral stand, slapping the word: regulation. For her calibre, all she did was sensationalize blogs in a derogative way—too personal, sleazy, immature, not serious. I thought she was in denial about blogs. Now, I think she’s scared of ‘em. Not what I expected—attack, look down upon, instead of embrace and extend. Pity.

Kudos to Ravish Kumar and Rajesh Lalwani—among others—for being graceful and eloquent enough in telling what blogs really are like.

  1. How can you regulate blogs if you can’t control the internet? Pretty stupid title, no? []

And I searched for the podcast/video for the same, and reached your blog. I saw the show and instantly hated it. Blogged about it too, and got similar reactions. In case you find a video, please lemmi know.

I could see the video yesterday, but today I see this: “Could not connect to the server. Please play the video again.” The server must be floored.

The media folks do not even allow blogs ( professional jealousy? ) , so it is not hard to imagine them not understanding it. Barkha and other media people need to understand, one does not need mass-comm degree (just like to write sw/utilities - one does need to have fancy mit/standford badge) and fancy face and fanicer guest list to provide a set of thoughts and do discussion on them. Blogs are different medium and allow better interactivity at present than the dumb SMS (Vote Y/N and send it xxxx).

Govind: That’s a very good point.
