My slip sends a mass invite. Oh hell!

Tue, 10 May 2005 at 08:08 • Chetan • Filed under Self

I was trying out an address book service for our maillist group community now that we’re doing away with our manually updated address book. One tiny slip by clicking “Send all” instead of “Send manually” got my account send an invite to my entire contact list. Oh the horror! It went to WP-Hackers, XJBEI group, my theme users, people to whom I’ve responded on a one line question, my senior colleagues, my boss and his boss, It’s a sinking feeling. I just realized that Gmail adds the address of whoever I respond to to my contact list. Oh hell!

I couldn’t possibly write to each one of you (465+ people) to say this, but I am truly sorry. If you received a message from Ringo to join as a friend, please ignore it and delete it from your mailboxes. I am totally floored in humility.

Got it and disregarded it. :-) I see those services as fishers too. I never volunteer information to any of those, no matter what.

OK, so I DID react and add my information. Sorry, Chetan.

Poonam, David, Marchal: Guys, I’m so sorry.
David: The reason I was planning to use Ringo was because they said they’re a sub-division of Monster.com (or so as they say in their About Us section). I just filled in a contact form at Monster to double-check this, since I feel responsible. I’ll post the details here when I get a reply.

John: I read your blog. So, it’s not about being friends, but about exposing trusted people to a third party without asking them first. Sorry. I’m still keeping those names and addresses that have already joined me as a friend, and I’ll be the first to inform each one of the signed-up ones to warn of any fishy things if I come across.

I understand that! I was kidding. I do appreciate how forthcoming you’ve been about the whole thing.
