My favicon

Mon, 27 Jun 2005 at 04:11 • Chyetanya Kunte • Filed under Blog, Leisure

I don’t think I have written about this before, and why I love what I have as my favicon. Favicon is a favorites icon that displays on the left-hand-side of my web address in the Address bar of compliant web browsers: Firefox and Safari and in certain feed readers. If you have tabs, it shows up there too. (For the uninitiated, do lookup Favicon on Wikipedia.)

My favicon in address bar

My favicon is actually a wireframe of a cube — a representative of a finite element model. I love the icon, because it not only represents the kind of work I do as a structural engineer but also tends to represent open ideas and a tendency towards open and unbiased thinking that I believe in, crave to be affiliated with and make a sincere effort towards such things.

Great explanation of your favicon. I must write this up sometime. My icon is based on a monogram I was designing for a ring. The ring didn’t materialize though ;-). It was based on my initials. Looks a little like an infinity symbol too.

Thanks for the reminder, Chetan. I should look at picking up a favicon for myself. Can you write a “how to” kind of a help section for first timers?

Hi Kiruba, you probably didn’t notice the info about Favicon on Wikipedia link in the post. It contains more information (and external links) than I can possibly think of putting up as a tutorial. Do look-up.

Not knowing how to create one myself, picked up the Indian flag instead. Would love to have an alternative or a better one though.

Satish: There are tools listed on that Wikipedia link. Look-up. You could also use a software like Iconworkshop to create your icon.
