License to drive

Fri, 8 Jun 2007 at 23:02 • Chetan • Filed under Holland, Self

I got my (Dutch) driver’s license today.

I surrendered my Malaysian driver’s license to Dutch authorities, in exchange, to obtain this. No tests—just some documentation, a medical check-up, and then some waiting before a letter arrived—from the Motor vehicle department—that read it’s time to open those corks.

The license now allows me to drive (or ride) anywhere within the EU. Now, I no longer have to look up on the internet—when I am going places—to see if they recognize either an Indian or a Malaysian driver’s license. That’s a privilege underestimated.

Most countries in the EU allow tourists to drive with their own country’s driver’s license. (You can look up this and other info on respective country’s tourism website to know more.)

I see no problem in your case if you’re visiting places. If you intend to stay longer than 6 months in any place, then you’d need to get a local (EU) driver’s license.
