Let’s kick this pig
Klaus Knopper released the new Knoppix V3.4 at CeBIT in Hannover between 18-21 March. The new Knoppix boasts 2.6.3 linux kernel, KDE 3.2, Gnome and support for ACPI, in addition to numerous other goodies packed-in. While visitors to CeBIT have the pleasure of getting the V3.4 on a CD, people like me are still waiting for the new ISOs to be made available for download on mirror sites.
As I wait (im)patiently, I gave Slax another spin after visiting its forums. While, the initial set-up to configure personal preferences & connect to internet looked-painful, I was relieved to note that after logout, there was an option to save configuration including ISP settings (like username, password, DNS info, firewall options) and personal desktop settings—all of which I saved to my USB flash disk: /dev/sda1.
Now for the next boot, all I had to do was login to the prompt and restore configuration before invoking gui that brings up the XFree86 & KDE3.2. Now I find, Slax (a 167MB boot CD) a wee-bit faster in my initial boot-up than my Knoppix V3.3 (700MB boot CD).
My Slax boot sequence:
Power-up
Login: root
Password: ****
#: configrestore /dev/sda1
#: gui
After KDE loads-up, connect RJ-45 pin & open Konsole
#: adsl-start
..Connected!
