Langkawi

We came back from Langkawi late Monday night. Holiday in Langkawi was a real treat. Sneha and I are glad that this happened.

Much to our delight, our kids, Saanvi and Aaryana behaved so well on a holiday that they hardly troubled us. Aaryana had a little cough to start with and a couple of cold-drinks began to make it worse. Apart from the normal indifference to finishing her meals ), Aaryana was alright and enjoyed as much as the rest of us.

We woke up Saturday morning to rush to the airport. The 10:30am flight was delayed by 15 minutes. Saanvi decided to make her presence felt and started making all kinds of gargling noises on-board before the takeoff. Soon, things settled down and kids went to sleep. The flight to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur is just about 45 minutes away and we reached there in a jiffy.

We hired a Nissan Sentra SE-R at the airport and dumped our stuff in it before kicking-off. For the next half-an-hour or so, we kept going in circles before stopping on the side to really look at the Langkawi road maps that we had on us.

Langkawi

By then everyone was famished and had to get some grub before we could go on. On our way to the Oriental Village, we stopped at KFC. After filling our tanks and a couple of pictures on the adjacent jetty with wonderful views, it was time to move on.

Oriental Village is the starting point for the cable car and is located on the foothills of the nearby range. Those hills provide a breathtaking view of Langkawi island. It’s really awesome! I think the pictures don’t do justice. Also, the cable car ride itself provides thrills never experienced before for, the last third of the stretch is a near vertical climb (sort of Where Eagles Dare kind). There are actually two stops on the hills that act as viewing galleries. Some area around are further being developed and yet to open to public.

By the time we got all that and came back down dizzy, it was 4:00pm. The check-in at Awana Porto Malai was scheduled at 3:00pm and we still had a place to visit on the way: The seven wells. We reached Seven wells—a falls of some kind, but never got to reach the place. Everyone started complaining that their legs were flagging and we returned without actually reaching the place by foot. But, we did get a glimpse of it from the hills, so I guess, we didn’t miss it that much.

Driving to the hotel and check-in was uneventful and we all took that dearly needed nap. When we woke-up we glanced at and around our hotel room. Overlooking the jetty and other smaller islands of the Langkawi cluster with a Mediterranean-style deck sit-out, it was breathtaking!

We freshened-up and got to the Pantai Cenang beach near our hotel. After mucking-up the sand and splashing water and then taking some lovely walks, we headed to Langkawi’s main-town: Kuah.

Kuah is located on the south-east side of Langkawi island and is famous for Eagle Square that has a very large eagle statue located near the jetty. After our visit to Eagle Square, we headed back to Pantai Cenang, which is about 18km away. On the way back to hotel we picked-up our dinner at Madras Curry House.

Day two began with breakfast at the hotel. We then proceeded to Galeria Perdana which is on the northeast side of the island. Galeria Perdana is a gallery of items presented to the former prime minister of Malaysia: Dr Mahatir Mohammad. Upon reaching Galeria Perdana, we realized that it was closed due to the festival: Eid-ul-fitr. So changing plans we proceeded to Tanjung Rhu beach that was near the area there.

Tanjung Rhu is the best beach in Langkawi. Pristine sands and lovely stretches, beautiful islands dot the beach’s landscape not to mention slith bodies enjoying nature’s wonderful coastline. The beach was too inviting, but we hadn’t planned a visit early that day. So, with no swimming gear around and the afternoon’s sun bearing hard upon us, we spent about an hour or so there before returning to the hotel. A quick lunch at Siam thai restaurant redefined the meaning of spiciness. With our tongues burning red-chillis, we rushed back to Awana to catch our island-hopping tour.

Four of us along with some co-passengers alighted a single outboard engine powered slender boat. First stop: one of the larger islands where we were dropped for wetting our legs and bodies with seawater. Then on to eagle-feed point, where our boatman dropped some meat and within seconds, we could see eagles diving in to pickup their moolah. The next stop was to another island where the island surrounds a fresh water lake within. The jetty to the island was damaged and it was awfully difficult for people to climb up and climb down. In all, the island-hopping was great fun and we returned back to the hotel just barely before the rain began to pour. Oh, I forgot to mention, just before we reached the hotel jetty, our boat ran out of gas and our man waited for his partner to part with some of his fuel.

On day three, we went to see the underwater world and Aaryana really enjoyed sighting Nemos and Dorys and was horrified to find the big shark. We saw some of the weirdest underwater organisms there. Amazing! Some that we didn’t find even in Singapore’s Sentosa.

We checked-out at 12:00 noon. Packed our bags and stuffed the boot. After lunch, it was time for another try at Galeria Perdana. Fortunately, it was open. From chinese dolls, metal art, exquisite paintings, scaled models to automobiles including the F1 Sauber Petronas, we found some exotic items presented to the former prime minister of Malaysia there. We went to Kuah from there for some coffee and quick shopping before returning to the airport to catch our return flight at 8:30pm.

In all, it was a wonderful holiday to remember. Sneha and I will probably read this back in years to come cherishing some memories.

Sunrayz, yes we did. 0-deg huh, ouch.
Patrix: I’m trying so hard to avoid my cap pics (they’re everywhere), but end up becoming part of the pictures that I like. I sorted a few specifically without the cap (lol), but didn’t realize that none of them made it to this entry. Which trackback post are you talking about?
Update: Trackbacks will be sent to a specific post, so if you use the permalink of a particular post, then it backtracks on that post. But if you link to the site, it just pings the site, no trackback displayed.

Its so nice to read that you all had a great time at Langkawi, too bad you missed a swim at Tanjung Rhu.

You all took some real good pictures, they look like as if they are taken out of catalogue or something, impressive stuff.
