If you love coffee

If you love coffee, you should know how many types are there, right? Sneha was reading my Colophon and she said: You say you’re a coffee lover, name two flavors of coffee.

Umm. I don’t know. I look dumb (she knows I am). Then I do a wry smile. Then defense. Coffee is coffee!

Now, I realize I have something there. So, I start to defend by trying to be a purist and by not picking-up names of commercial offerings, I stick my chest out and say: Coffee has no other name. Why should it be called Cappucino (I think I got the spelling wrong, never mind) or Mocha or something else?

Apart from the leg-pulling stunts we pull on each other, the first time I really enjoyed coffee was in Udupi on NH17. That was in February 1988. It was served in a tiny inverted conical shaped stainless steel cup filled to the top, no millimeter spared. To save the spillover, there was another tiny vessel shorter but slightly larger in diameter within which the conical steel cup was placed. But, it was not the funny cup or the spillover vessel that was interesting, it was the coffee itself. And it tasted awesome.

Every time I go back to India, Sneha and I enjoy this. This is the no-name-coffee that kicks my brains out when I savour it. And there’s no fun if you don’t make the spluttering noise while having (table manners and etiquette out the window) =).

So guys, now you know that my knowledge of coffee really sucks, is shortsighted and be amused that I hardly know the names of the flavors that run amok. Yet, I’m a coffee lover =)
