Hardware update

Sneha and I went to Low Yat Plaza for browsing through the newest available hardware. I went through a ton of it. First thought on Notebooks: I liked a few: Sony’s T-series, Fujitsu Lifebooks and Apple Powerbook. One gripe on Sony and Fujistu models were that they had a very high screen resolution 1280×1028. That’s a little too tiny for my 3+ myopic vision. I don’t want to strain my eyes anymore than I already do. I really liked the Powerbook a lot. But, if I buy now, I’ll get OSX Panther, just when Apple is planning to ship Tiger soon. Everybody knows that OS updates from Apple are not free. That said, my next notebook will definitely be a Powerbook; but just not now. (I was also very keen on a possible Thinkpad, until IBM sold their line to a relatively unknown chinese company.)

Now the desktops: Mac mini came this close. But, Apple charges a very hefty price for even a small upgrade of RAM. This is absolutely ridiculous. To get a 1GB RAM, I’d end up shelling out almost two-thirds of the price of a mini. That just blew me off. If Apple could drop their upgrade price to a decent PC RAM prices, then, I would not bother looking at another PC. I am a wannabe convert, I’ve had this book for close to a year now, but I can’t get a deal.

So, in all likelihood, I’ll be buying an HP Pavilion this weekend. It seems to have most of the things that I need and it’s fair price including a 17-inch Samsung display and a media reader slot built-in. For more, all that I require is a phillips screw-driver to add-on.

Many thanks to all those who wrote in on my previous post.
