Hanging up, Goodbye from ckunte.com
I am finally hanging-up my boots on this domain. I tried doing this twice before, but things kept coming back. This time, I am burying it for good. This domain and my hosting plan will expire this July. I am going to let it die. And no, I am not kidding.
Blogging on my own domain was both fun and good. But, together with it came maintenance and, like I’ve mentioned before, I have only so much time in a day. Exclude long working hours, time for my family and the time of everyday life in existence. I had a little time to write, but virtually none for maintaining and keeping a constant watch over my files, security issues, vigil against people and bots trying to attack and misuse my site.
Part of the problem has been shared hosting (dedicated is too expensive for a hobby). Any one site that opens-up a vulnerability on the shared host is contagious and the malice spreads to everyone else on the host.
My files were modified again two days ago. It happened (apparently) because there’s either a serious security problem with my host, and/or, some site owner who is sharing my host server has not secured his site well enough.
Once a server is compromised, it is probably in an autopilot mode for everything going bad and it is the beginning of a nightmare for site owners.
I can continue to secure my site behind the screen, keep warning my host, or dump the existing one to find a new one, but there’s really no joy. Also, I’ll prove nothing.
New problems and sophisticated methods will continue to raise their ugly heads as anti-spam services pin-down spam, and raise the level of security. When spam does not propogate, it is time for spammers to attack and control websites by perversive methods, so that they can push their sick marketing ways out to users on the web.
I do not want to graduate from a regular blogger to a security novice. I have enough things to do that give me a lot more joy than be involved in a thankless job of securing a site just so it exists normally.
So, it’s time to let go.
I’ve had a good number of loyal readers whom I would particularly like to thank. My heartfelt thanks also goes out to all the people sharing their thoughts in comments.
Goodbye and God bless. The lights go out now.
The following comments were lost when this site went offline in April 2006. Thanks to a tip by Jax, I was able to salvage them via Google Reader.
