GPS in India now

I am excited to learn that GPS based navigation technology is now available for consumers, roadrunners in India—via my friend, Govind Kanshi. I don’t have the details, but I am hoping that he blogs more about it soon.

It will be interesting to see it in action in Delhi, for which the map updates will have to be as frequent as the new emerging roads and existing roads being encroached and blocked.

Yes, true. At the moment, I am informed that Maps are about 4-8 months behind in time, with regard to updates. But as an optimist, my take—something is definitely better than nothing. And if this consumer technology catches the trend of cellphones and other most popular devices, then, improvements may not be far away.

IT’s called SatGuide I think. Lots of ads in teh newspapers, but it doesn’t really look at par with the international competition, and afaik it’s got only a few of the main cities covered for now.
Talking about GPS, I recently got hold of this, and while it doesn’t really show you where to go next, but when you get back home and plug it in, it shows you where you went. Fun!

I forgot to mention the best part, it automagically geotags your pictures based on the time they were taken, comparing them to where you were at that time in the GPS logs! Nifty!

Let us just say the GPS stuff sucks at this time for the inland travel, it is ok for the local place, but the frequency of updates leave a lot for desire. Sometimes one has just wrong data, since I do not have legal clearance - i can’t post the name - but would advise to stay away for some more time till the services improve
