Generation O

Mon, 9 May 2005 at 08:50 • Filed under Leisure

My in-laws are in town. This is their second visit to Kuala Lumpur. About the same time last year, my parents were with us. It’s nice to have your family visiting you, especially when you’re away from home.

From these visits and trips from the elders of the family, I consistently notice that this generation has a certain awe about things that we normally take for granted.

My father-in-law is an old school architect who never uses computer at home or office. So, just like my dad, he was curious to know what I read. My blog was open and he started reading. I was surprised by his sudden surge of interest and wanting to read and open links or asking how to do things inspite of lack of proper “mouse training”. He also found the categories on my blog fascinating (by way of organization), something that he could never find in a conventional way.

He was thrilled to read Sakal, a marathi daily from India on the internet. While browsing through our trips section, he came across Bukit Tinggi’s virtual tour link and was flabbergasted to see the virtual 360 degree tour of certain locations.

It’s the same story when it comes to gadgets: mobile phones, DVD players, MP3 players, digital cameras. It holds them in awe and at the same time, leaves them troubled about what to buy, what features to have and how to choose. But almost all the older-genre that I meet know about mp3, and they want to have it. It’s the kind of media where hundreds of songs on a single CD can be stored. That’s the bottomline. My father-in-law knows that. Somehow, when I asked him, I wasn’t sure he knew =)

And so, raising the eyebrows continue (bothways =)).
