FeedDemon’s disappointing subscription model

This seems to be benefitting only the existing Newsgator users. They get the free software. Good for them. Existing users of FeedDemon (like me) get a two-year subscription of Newsgator’s services online in addition to syncing between Newsgator Online and FeedDemon. I’m not interested. If I was, I would have chosen Newsgator+Outlook for my feed needs in the first place and not buy FeedDemon.

I have too much respect for Nick Bradbury to say anything about this decision here. He’s a great guy. He has listened to his users earlier, has given away features like podcast enclosures, which are a major revision material, in free minor upgrades.

FeedDemon users have provided a very thoughtful feedback on his post on the topic. I hope there’s some room for those suggestions.

My stand as a user: I will continue to use FeedDemon. I may not use Newsgator’s services (even though it’s free for the next two years). I will not adopt a subscription based software. If version 1.6 is tied to the subscription model, then, it’s not for me. I will not upgrade, I just hope that 1.5 isn’t already.

Update [9 July]: Nick Bradbury and Newsgator have listened to users’ opinion and are reverting back to their original stand on how the FeedDemon is used. Nick says:

We’ve heard loud and clear that you don’t want FeedDemon to stop working after your subscription runs out. You believe that you purchased it, so it should continue to work. Period.

And we agree.

This is fantastic. Nick and Newsgator, thanks for listening.
