Dubai is the new boom town

Guardian seems to think so (via Kottke). That would probably explain why the cost of living and salaries are sky rocketing in Dubai in recent times, if I am to believe my contacts there.

The airport is stunning and The Palm is breathtaking, but there’s something about Dubai that fails to sink in to me. Possibly the effect of watching too many Indian films. They portray Dubai as a poor man’s Al–Andalus. Almost everyone who has hit the rock bottom dreams of going to Dubai to make it big. Here’s a quote from one of the popular Indian movies (in Hindi, sorry no translation available):

Kyo be phatka, kidhar ja raha hain?
Dubai ja raha hoon, saab. Import-export ka business ke liye.
