Browser updates

Thu, 26 Oct 2006 at 21:05 • Chyetanya Kunte • Filed under Browser, Software

I cannot update my parents’ computer to Internet Explorer 7, because it runs on Windows 98. Whereas, latest versions of Firefox and Opera install nicely. And when it comes to updates, nothing beats Firefox, because it is dial-up friendly and updates are never over 700kb.

So, Opera becomes the new IE and Firefox remains the default browser. Bye bye, Internet Explorer.

MSFT are known for being resource hogs. But I was pleasantly surprised by the changed and improved interface in IE7. I don’t know much about the security vulnerabilities that IE is mostly hated for.

I still use FireFox though. The ver.2.0 is a great improvement. These folks continue to impress.

My gripe is about making IE7 available only to XP users. May be this is the price to pay for tying the browser to the OS.

Chetan, this is OT, but for better reliability, security and applications support/availability, I would strongly recommend migrating your parents workstation to, at least, Windows 2000. Windows 98 is known to have been even worse than Windows 95 SR2.

Once again, this isn’t so you can install IE7 (IE7 will not install on Windows 2000 neither, for example). It is only to make your parents computing experience a bit more pleasant. Cheers!

David, yes, you’re right, thanks. The problem is that the machine probably needs a hardware upgrade as well, if it needs to be upgraded on the OS.

The very fact that Windows 98 hasn’t made any difference in their computing experience tends to put that upgrade off, at least for a while.
