DivX vs. WMV

Monday, 7 November 2005

I’ve been doing some video stuff, whenever I get some time, towards getting those backups in order. Recently while converting our Diwali miniDV tape, I typically used Microsoft Windows Movie Maker to edit and crop the clips, added a background track and completed the storyline. When compiled, a 45 minute video complete with titles and credits weighed about 800MB.

By AVI or even by MPEG-2 standards, for a video of size 640×480 with 30fps, this is quite good. Then, I put DivX 6.0 Converter to work. You will not be able to guess the converted DivX filesize. It weighed 421MB! DivX Converter reduced a WMV file close to half its original size while maintaining a near identical quality. Wow! unbelievable!
