Trackbacks aren’t dead
Tom Coates says trackbacks are dead. My guess is he’s tired of the fact that his software cannot handle the onslaught and is forced to turn them off. It’s amazing how many are forced to resort to this. I did this a while ago and it wasn’t fun.
Any good feature if not implemented properly, will open avenues for exploitation and misuse as is the case with trackbacks. Do you get a new email address every time you get excessive spam on it, and if you do, how long will you run? It’s time you stop running and deal with it.
Trackbacks do work and you can get them to work by moderation (the keyword here) in light of excessive spam. Trackbacks need not be instantaneous. If the site owner receiving the trackback feels it appropriate and relevant to her post, she can then moderate to include it as part of the feedback. Trackbacks should be left to the discretion of the owner if she’d like to list that in her own trackback section, just like the comments. Most serious bloggers do take praise and criticism in the same breath, so this isn’t a problem.
If your software doesn’t provide you a moderation feature to screen the signal from noise, then get your support to listen to your feature request such as this. If that doesn’t solve the problem, you could always use the other software that does.
very nice post Chetan!
4 years agoHello Chetan,
4 years agoI commented on your entry on my weblog and now there is a user comment there asking about the basic principles of trackback. I tried to answer form what I understood, but I am not sure I got it completely right, especially when it comes to the exact differences of pingback and trackback, with a special view on WordPress. Perhaps you woudl be so kind to have a look at that comment-thread and perhaps correct what is wrong? That would be very nice, really.
Kind regards
Marchal – who likes trackbacks a lot.
Hi Marchal: I couldn’t comment on the thread on your blog (as it requires Registration). You probably didn’t notice that there’s a link to trackbacks in the first line. It should have probably read as “A Beginner’s Guide to TrackBack“. I guess that answers everything you need to know about trackbacks.
Pingbacks are similar and better explained in this post called Whitepaper: Pingback vs Trackback.
4 years agotrackback is cool features but its been abused so much coz of spam that many prefer to keep it shut
trackback are helpful …as they help in the networking, which the bases of internet one thing connected to another “link”
